    The Al Fateh Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world while also being Bahrain’s main place of worship for many people.  It was built 28 years ago, in 1987, under the funding and guidance of Sheikh Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa.  It’s named after Ahmed Al Fateh who was the first monarch of the country.  Capable of catering to 7,000 worshippers at any one time, this attraction is a must-see if visiting Bahrain. 

    The Al-Fateh Mosque (also known as Al-Fateh Islamic Center and Al Fateh Grand Mosque) covers 6,500 square metres and has the capacity to accommodate over 7,000 worshippers at a time. The mosque was built by the late Sheikh Isa ibn Salman Al Khalifa in 1987 and was named after Ahmed Al Fateh, the founder of Bahrain. In 2006, Al Fateh became the site of the National Library of Bahrain.

    The Mosque is an iconic representation of modern Islamic architecture.     About the Mosque

    Besides being a place of worship, the mosque is one of the premier tourist attractions in Bahrain. It is open Saturday - Thursday from 9am to 4pm and tours are conducted in a variety of languages including English, French, Filipino, Russian and many others. The mosque is closed to visitors and tourists on all Fridays.

    The mosque is made up of different materials from other countries including; Austrian glass, marble made in Italy and teak coming all the way from India. Tours are available on arrival and guides will enlighten you on religious etiquette while showing you various features of the attraction’s incredible architecture.

    Taking part in a free guided tour from the knowledgeable and professional staff is a must to learn the history of the building, daily activities and much more. Tour guides are very open for discussions about religions and they will answer any questions you may have. Women must be covered by wearing an abaya and headscarf. If you do not have one, you can have the opportunity to borrow one which will be lent to you at no charge, to be returned after your tour.

    Visitors will be mesmerised throughout the fascinating tour. Upon entering the mosque, you’ll have the opportunity to take pictures around the courtyard and inside the mosque while the tour guide explains the structure of the building as well as how the Islamic religion was founded and the differences between certain religions. You can only enter the main prayer room as classes are taking place throughout the day.  

    Learn about the building

    The mosque is the largest place of worship of its kind in Bahrain. Located next to the King Faisal Highway in Juffair, which is a town located in the Bahraini capital city of Manama. The huge dome built on top of the Al Fateh Mosque is constructed entirely of fibreglass. Weighing over 60 tonnes, the dome is currently the world's largest fibreglass dome. The marble used in the floors was shipped in from Italy and teak wood from India. Throughout the mosque are beautiful Kufic calligraphy writings.
