When searching for places to visit during your time in Bahrain, the Bahrain National Museum is a venue that should be on your list. As one of the largest and oldest public museums in the country, the venue opened in 1988 covering 27,800 square metres covering two buildings.

Located on the King Faisal Highway in the city of Manama, it’s a truly remarkable museum and inspiring collection of Bahraini historical artefacts and culture spanning over 5,000 years. The museum acts as a mechanism to improve the understanding and knowledge of Bahrain’s history not only amongst its natives but its mission encourages exposure to international culture by hosting many global cultural and art exhibitions.

It’s well worth giving yourself a half day or more to cover the nine galleries, educational hall, gift shop and caféteria that make up the museum completely. Explore thousands of years of Bahraini history

The museum opened in 1988 in a stunning royal ceremony in front of elite officials. Constructed in the middle of Manama and Muharraq, Bahrain National Museum takes guests on a journey through 4,000 years of Bahraini history through nine halls depicting the country’s heritage, customs and traditions, burial mounds, traditional handicrafts, ancient documents, manuscripts and Islamic period hall.

Make sure to stop by the Durand Stone, a long black basalt sculpture dating back to the Babylonian era and exhibits in the ancient history section such as the actual burial mound which was transported from its site in the desert and reconstructed within the museum.

On walking around the museum you’ll discover three halls devoted to archaeology and the ancient civilisation of the Dilmun, while two other halls depict the culture and lifestyle of Bahrain's recent pre-industrial past.

The Natural History Hall, opened as an addition to the museum in 1993, with aim of focusing on the natural environment of the country. Featuring specimens of Bahrain’s flora and fauna this collection gives an impressive perspective on the land and sea surrounding the country.

For curious minds, the museum offers an opportunity to visit this well presented and interesting attraction. The ambience of the venue lets you wander through the halls using the interactive floor map. Knowledgeable staff can direct you and also tell you information about the exhibits. Look out for events and exhibitions which are hosted regularly.

The well-maintained museum presents its nations exhibits in a very user-friendly format and includes an interactive floor map of the island of Bahrain.

On your exit, stop by the café for snacks and to try some traditional Arabian cuisine or for a delicious refreshment.
